Northwest Territorial Mint Wins Governor’s Award for Hiring of Employees with Disabilities

Internationally Known Mint Located in Auburn, Washington Is Named Medium Private Employer of the Year by the Governor’s Committee on Disability Issues and Employment

The same company that has created signature coins for the Secretary of Defense, Microsoft, and Celebrity Poker Showdown does it by employing individuals with disabilities to manufacture and distribute the coins.

Northwest Territorial Mint has accommodated its placements in multiple ways, including work trials to demonstrate skills, work-schedule modifications, productivity assistance, working through interpersonal communication barriers, job reassignment, and modified attendance requirements due to medical concerns.  Candidates have been trained to perform specialized tasks, and some have already received job and monetary advancement.  All placements are full-time competitive employment with benefits.

The public benefits as well for these hires. Each candidate sent to Northwest Territorial Mint gains income, but also confidence and dignity through his or her work.  They are contributing taxpayers with full-time jobs that offer room for advancement.

Susie Burdick at the Governor’s Committee on Disability Issues and Employment said of Northwest Territorial Mint, “Northwest Territorial Mint is well-deserving of this recognition because by employing these individuals it makes it more likely that they will take control over their own lives, empowering them to share their strengths and realize their potential.”

The nomination was made by Orion Industries, a Federal Way, WA company that seeks to place qualified individuals with disabilities. Ten have been placed since mid-2006. Orion’s Cathy Wegner, who arranged the placements, said, “These employees have been successful because Northwest Territorial Mint has really been doing this type of hiring even before I started making placements. That openness to hiring employees with disabilities made it easy to find the right candidates.”
