Nevada’s Governor, Harley Owners Group GM Witness First Strike of Silver HOG Coins at Northwest Territorial Mint Event
HOG General Manager Benny Suggs and Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons with silver Harley-Davidson coin
The minting of the first national challenge coins in silver for the Harley Owners Group (HOG) drew 500 bikers and their leader, retired Admiral and HOG general manager Benny Suggs. In addition, Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons (himself a Harley enthusiast), Lyon County Manager Dennis Stark, and Nevada Assemblymen Tom Grady and James Settelmeyer all visited Northwest Territorial Mint in Dayton, NV on September 23, 2009.
Presented to Suggs, the silver medallions were just one highlight of a visit by nearly 500 HOG members nearing the end of a 1,900-mile ride recreating the Pony Express route from St. Joseph, MO, to Sacramento, CA. A version of the national HOG challenge coin featuring the official Harley Owners Group logo on one side and the HOG shield on the other was provided to every member present. Each was especially edgemarked with the legend, “Pony Express Ride 2009” for the event. No other HOG challenge coins will be so edgemarked, making them prized Harley-Davidson collectibles.
An official licensee of Harley-Davidson, Northwest Territorial Mint was selected to create national challenge coins for HOG’s one million members. It will also mint challenge coins for individual HOG chapters.
