WA State National Guard Aviation Unit

Wanting a unit coin to hand out to his soldiers as awards and thank-yous, Colonel Anthony Bolante asked us to design a coin expressing his personality, love of surfing, and a scene from Apocalypse Now involving a helicopter commander obsessed with surfing.

The surfboard-shaped coin is a combination of the surfboard in the movie and COL Bolante’s personal board. The shark-bite bottle opener feature we implemented particularly delighted him. The final result pleased him so much, he picked them up in person in order to be able to hand them out at his weekend Army drill.

Buying Power

Northwest Territorial Mint: Did You Know?Small coins were pretty valuable in the times of the Roman empire. One small silver coin (a denarius) could buy enough wheat for 25 pounds of bread or 10 pounds of olive oil.
